Consumer Tip:

Why Interest Rates Make a Difference
There is a lot of talk about interest rates being at historic lows, but what does that mean if you are a consumer shopping for a mortgage?  A good rule of thumb is that one percentage point equals about  $15,000 in buying power.  For example the difference between an interest rate of 5.5% vs 4.5% means that, over the life of the loan, you will pay the same amount of money, but at the higher interest rate, roughly $15,000 more will go toward interest.  At the lower interest rate you can invest that amount in the property itself.  Visit with a local lending professional to help you analyze your individual situation and make a realistic mortgage decision.
